The Hero

Johnny Anthem

Ex-Marine · Father · The Hand of Daun

Jonathan Umbaka is Johnny to his friends and Johnny Anthem to the ones who know the story: during the Second Civil War he sang the national anthem in a Demo-Confederate prison, when his fellow Marines thought they might not see morning. The guards hated it. The Marines needed it. The name stuck.

On Christmas Eve 2027 he is out of work in a tight two-bedroom in Queensbridge, scraping by for his wife Elena and his daughter Bintu, with his best friend Sammy asleep on the couch. Then one terrible night takes everything, and Johnny wakes five years later on a secret moon.

“Johnny, to be a man, you must take care of your family. Never falter.”— Johnny’s father, Chapter 1
